Counseling and Coaching: Supporting Growth and Wellness

Understanding Key Differences

Both coaches and counselors actively listen, observe, provide support, and help clients set and achieve goals to improve their lives. However, their approaches and scope differ significantly.

Counseling/Therapy

Focus

Primarily addresses diagnosable mental health conditions, trauma, grief and loss, substance use and/or addiction, and interpersonal problems caused by dysfunctional patterns of thinking and behaviors. The aim is to alleviate distress and improve overall mental well-being.

Method

Therapists utilize specific, evidence-based treatment modalities to treat the condition(s) presented by the client. These modalities are rooted in clinical psychological theory.

Licensure

Requires specific licensure, which dictates the geographic areas where therapy services can be provided, in my case, Washington State. This ensures adherence to professional standards and regulations.

Insurance

Counseling services are often covered by health insurance plans, provided there is a diagnosable mental health or substance use disorder present.

Life Coaching

Focus

Centers on strengths and works to support individuals in developing and applying mindsets, perspectives, skills, and actions that improve life. Coaching explores values, interests, passions, needs, and strengths, as well as areas for growth. It focuses on identifying and moving toward personal and/or professional goals, rather than psychopathology or diagnosable clinical conditions.

Method

Through focused coaching support, clients can learn helpful skills, practices, and perspectives to grow personally and/or professionally, navigate life challenges, and create their best and most meaningful and satisfying life. Coaching may include defining life dreams and goals, formulating plans to foster skills, overcoming barriers, and improving habits and accountability.

Geographic Limitations

There are no geographic limitations on coaching, allowing clients to live anywhere.

Insurance

Health insurance typically does not cover coaching services.

Importance of Choosing or Transitioning

Understanding the distinctions between coaching and counseling is crucial for ensuring individuals receive the most appropriate support for their specific needs. A professional with interests, education, expertise, and experience in both therapy and vocational rehabilitation counseling can provide valuable options.

For example:

  • A current therapy client who no longer meets diagnostic criteria for a mental health condition may smoothly transition to a coaching relationship to continue their personal growth journey.
  • Conversely, if, during a coaching relationship, it becomes apparent that a client needs therapy for a developing or previously unrecognized mental health condition, a coach with a clinical background can recognize this and help make appropriate referrals.

This integrated approach ensures that clients are supported effectively, whether their needs involve clinical treatment or personal and professional development. While coaching for personal growth is often insight-oriented, it also focuses on helping clients apply that insight in ways that move them forward and take action, ultimately helping them define their goals and create the life they envision.
